Dedication 2005

Mr. Robert Lord is a modern renaissance man.
He has many different talents, experiences and
wisdom, all of which he has successfully utilized
to help his students achieve success in the classroom
and beyond. He is a polished fly fisherman, and
he has camped, hiked and canoed throughout New
England. Mr. Lord initiated the recycling program,
ordering all those blue boxes in our classrooms. Mr.
Lord directed the recycling program at the Middle
School for the first ten years.

Mr. Lord has been a mathematics teacher at
the Middle School for the last twenty years. During
that time he has integrated mathematics with all the
other subjects, including foreign languages and computer
science. He has even had his lessons and homework
assignments translated into at least five different
languages. Mr. Lord was one of the first teachers to
recognize the special value of computers in the schools,
and was one of the first instructors to create a teacher
web page. He envisioned, designed, nurtured, stocked
and maintained the Amherst Middle School Arboretum.
From early spring and late into the fall, students can
be seen, working out mathematics formulae while
they learn about the flora of the school's Arboretum,
and grow to appreciate the beauty and history of both
the native and rare trees now found in our own
backyard.
Teachers, students and parents will all miss
his expertise, friendliness, sage advice, great sense of
humor and Irish charm. We wish you well, Mr. Lord.
